A speckled hen stands in a spray of pine and a red ribbon on the side of this hand-painted stoneware mug, raised straight out of the mold so the pattern sits under your thumb. The pedestal foot lifts it off the table, the inside is glazed soft green, and the handle picks up the same shade above a band of green stripes. It goes in the dishwasher and the microwave, with the caution that stoneware gets hot in there, so it earns a spot in the daily rotation rather than the back of the cupboard. Mud Pie drew it for farmhouse Christmas tables. Fill it on a cold morning or wrap it with a bag of coffee for a neighbor.
