An angel with her wings spread and a candle well resting on each one, shaped in textured terracotta under a soft whitewash that lets the clay show through at the edges. The pressed lines down the gown and along the wing tips take the light once the tapers are lit. She stands 5 1/2 by 6 1/4 inches, small enough for a bedside table or a bathroom shelf and steady enough for the middle of a dining table. Mud Pie made her for the quiet end of holiday decorating, the corner of the house that gets one candle instead of a whole display. She gives well at a christening, a wedding, or as a first Christmas in a new home.
