Amber comes to the table at a birthday tea party in October, seated on her own chair with a little cup set out in front of her. She wears a sunflower-print dress, a plush burgundy jacket, red-checked stockings and burgundy Mary Jane shoes, and her curly auburn hair falls past her shoulders. At 20 in tall, she is a friend a child can carry by the hand.

Ganz makes her as a soft plush doll, ready to be wrapped in tissue and handed over with a bow when the candles are blown out. Later, once the party guests have gone home, she can ride in the back seat on the way to the pumpkin patch, and wait on the pillow at bedtime for the next chapter of the story, with her sunflower dress smoothed and her curls brushed.
